The Reading Department is a unique feature of Japari School and it aims to develop reading strategies in each learner, to enable them to become eager and independent readers.
Our Reading Department has 8 teachers, who give reading support to all learners from grades 2 to 5. It is important to note, that, although these teachers have a wealth of experience and many different areas of expertise, they do not work in isolation. They liaise with the class teachers and other therapists in order to gain a holistic picture of each learner and to develop an Individual Education Plan for Reading.
The vision of the Reading Department is to encourage different reading skills and the acquisition of knowledge through reading and foster a love for reading. Rather than a group approach, the Japari Reading Department has adopted an individual approach to reading.
Learners have different interests and needs, so a variety of reading material is used; books; newspapers; articles; dictionaries; encyclopedias; computers and games.
The goals of the Reading Department are to:
- Develop phonological awareness.
- Improve oral expressive vocabulary.
- Foster reading fluency and comprehension.
- Develop an appropriate written response.
Parental support is also invaluable and we urge all parents to become actively involved with their child’s reading programme by: listening to daily reading, attending our Read Alongs, taking part in the Paired Reading Programme etc.
The focus of every reading lesson is on reading for meaning and enjoyment.
