At Japari School, our play-based, CAPS-aligned Grade R programme is designed to inspire confident, curious learners. A joyful, secure start
Grade R is a crucial and exhilarating year for your child as they move from nursery school to the formal disciplines of learning to read and write in Grade 1.
Our classrooms create a joyful and secure environment that makes this transition seamless. Throughout the year, we keep an informal and playful atmosphere, encouraging pupils to take part actively in every activity. We emphasise exploration, discovery and self-challenge through a blend of play and structured activities.
A strong foundation
Imagine you are building a wall, but the foundation bricks are not aligned or are missing. Every layer above becomes more wobbly unless there is intervention.
Early support works like a sturdy wall. By addressing learning challenges early, we can stop gaps in knowledge from widening, like repairing small cracks before they become major structural issues, so that each child has a stable base on which to build their future education.
Our Grade R includes early intervention for learning support, so every child receives the attention and resources they need to succeed.

What is Grade R at Japari like?
Our Grade R is play-based and CAPS-aligned, and co-taught with Grade 1 by expert teachers working together. Children learn through purposeful play and structured activities in small, mixed-age stations with buddy support.
How much does Grade R cost in 2027?
Grade R is R10,000 a month over eleven months, from January to November, which is R110,000 for the year. A R2,000 non-refundable enrolment fee is payable when you accept a place, and art materials are R1,500 a year.

Yes. Our Grade R includes early intervention for learning support, so every child receives the attention and resources they need to succeed. Addressing learning challenges early stops small gaps from widening.
How does Grade R prepare children for Grade 1?
Because Grade R is co-taught with Grade 1, children grow familiar with Grade 1 routines and teachers before they start formal schooling, which makes the move into Grade 1 a natural next step.
